Heavy Duty Padel Fence: When Standard Specs Aren’t Enough & What to Upgrade
Standard FIP-compliant padel fence specifications are designed for typical club and residential use. But certain applications generate loads or environmental conditions that exceed what a baseline kit is engineered to handle. Coastal sites with salt exposure, high-altitude installations with snow loading, schools and public facilities with vandalism risk, and tournament venues with broadcast equipment all benefit from a heavy duty padel fence specification. when standard specs are not enough
The standard 4mm wire / 50×50mm mesh / 70-micron galvanization kit is engineered for installations below 500m altitude, more than 1km from saltwater, with no specific vandalism or impact load beyond FIP ball impact. If your site sits outside any of those envelopes — coastal, alpine, urban high-traffic, or tournament-spec — you need at least one of the upgrades below. Most multi-court commercial facilities we ship in 2026 include at least two heavy-duty upgrades as standard, because the cost premium is small relative to the extension in service life.
upgrade 1 — thicker wire diameter
Going from 4mm to 5mm wire diameter adds roughly 12% to the panel weight and 8% to material cost, but it increases weld shear strength and panel rigidity meaningfully. We recommend 5mm wire for short-side back panels on every installation (this is where ball impact is most frequent) and for the full perimeter on facilities expecting high-use club traffic. For tournament facilities we recommend 5mm wire across the entire perimeter, plus an upgraded post section (100×100mm SHS at 4mm wall) for the short-side corners.
upgrade 2 — heavier galvanization
The standard 70-micron hot-dip galvanization is sufficient for most inland installations. Coastal sites within 500m of saltwater should specify 100 microns minimum; sites within 100m of breaking surf should specify 140 microns plus powder coating. The cost premium is roughly 6% for 100 microns and 14% for 140 microns plus powder. The service life extension is from roughly 10 years (standard) to 15 years (100 microns) to 20+ years (140 microns plus powder).
upgrade 3 — anti-climb mesh
Standard 50×50mm mesh opening is large enough to grip with fingers and provide a foothold for climbing. Schools, correctional-adjacent facilities, and sites with public access at night often specify 25×50mm anti-climb mesh, which removes the foothold and the finger grip. The cost premium is roughly 18% on mesh panels because the wire density is higher. Anti-climb mesh also slightly reduces visibility through the fence, so consider the trade-off against spectator and broadcast viewing.
upgrade 4 — anti-graffiti coating
A clear anti-graffiti topcoat applied over the powder coating allows spray paint and marker to be wiped off with a mild solvent without damaging the underlying finish. The cost premium is roughly 4% on coated components and is highly recommended for urban installations where graffiti is a realistic maintenance concern.

A municipal sports center in Barcelona commissioned a four-court outdoor facility in 2025 in a high-traffic public park. The specification included 5mm wire on all panels, 100-micron galvanization, anti-climb mesh on the lower 1.5m of every panel, and anti-graffiti topcoat on all coated components. After 14 months of operation including one graffiti incident (cleaned successfully with solvent and no trace), the perimeter shows no corrosion and no maintenance requirements beyond routine cleaning. Is heavy-duty fencing worth it for an indoor facility?
Indoor facilities face lower wind load and zero salt exposure, so the heavy-duty galvanization and anti-climb mesh are not necessary. We still recommend 5mm wire on short-side back panels for high-use club traffic and anti-graffiti coating on panels facing public corridors.
How do I know which upgrades are required vs nice-to-have?
Required upgrades are driven by site conditions (altitude, distance from coast, expected use intensity). Nice-to-have upgrades are driven by operational considerations (graffiti risk, expected service life). Can I mix heavy-duty and standard panels in the same facility?
Yes, and it is what we usually recommend. Short-side back panels take the most ball impact and benefit most from heavy-duty specification. Long-side panels face less impact and can use standard specs. This hybrid approach controls cost while addressing the highest-wear surfaces.
